Scientists are beginning to say that wine helps us to be healthier. What are these components of wine that help us be healthier? Which wines should we choose, are some better than others? We will endeavor to show some of this information here.
There has been studies that point to the red wines as being the ones to choose for health purposes. The reason for this is the red wines have more flavonoids and antioxidants than other types. Red wines are red because the skin of the grapes is left in the fermentation container. The grape skins contain the flavonoids that scientists are talking about. The flavonoids and antioxidants in the red wine help to reduce arterial plaque that scientists say are responsible for cardiovascular disease. Therein lies the reason/excuse to drink more red wine. Some of the better red wines for these purposes are: Cabernet Sauvinon, Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir. The Merlots and red zinfandels contain less flavonoids but do have more than most of the white wines.
According to experts, men should consume one or two four ounce glasses of red wine daily but women should limit their consumption to only one four ounce glass daily. Professor Roger Corder, the author of a book
entitled, “The Wine Diet”, says that he is certain that we should include red wine in our diets. Professor Corder has spent years studying the health benefits of red wine and wondered why the French have a much lower incidence of cardiovascular disease even though their diets are higher in fat. In the southwest area of France the life expectancy is the highest. The reason, he believes, is because the red wine there has the highest antioxidant content.
Go ahead then and drink your red wine, in moderation, to have a healthier cardiovascular system and because it just tastes good. It’s great to finally find something that tastes good AND is good for you.
Remember to choose the red wines that are the highest in flavonoids and antioxidants, they are good for you!
