Chocolate, like most ingredients used to prepare food has to be of good quality. So, do not hesitate to buy good or even very good chocolate when shopping. We’re your drive-thru customers. The ones who pay your bills – so listen up. Ok, let’s admit it, we occasionally find ourselves in your takeout drive-thru line, particularly on football nights. Why can’t we understand anything your menu board says? It’s not a lot of fun sitting out here talking to a backlighted piece of plastic under the best of conditions. But when it spits out a bunch of verbal gibberish, we begin to doubt ourselves. Maybe we just don’t have the right stuff to order drive-thru takeout.

“You rode an elephant?” I asked, my eyes popping in sheer amazement at the photographs taped to the black pages of the scrapbook.

Colorful images of a North African bazaar, elephant and camel riding, tents in the Sahara Desert and cooking over open fires were just a few of the fascinating images that captured my imagination. That scrapbook chronicling several years of far-flung adventures belonged to my dad’s second wife.

During a portion of my junior and senior years in high school, my dad was married to Joyce, a jet setter he met on a barefoot Windjammer cruise.

While taking a break from required writing, I began to reminisce about a recent trip to Chicago. The growling of my tummy reminded me I’ve neglected to eat today and it’s past four o’clock in the afternoon! That’s not sensible at all. Let me tell you about dining in Chicago before I get a bite to eat.

While in Chicago, I had the exciting task of deciding where I was going to eat. It’s my guess that just about every American and many foreigners have heard about dining in Chicagoland. If you’ve never had a deep dish pizza made in Chicago, you’re missing a treat! I say this and I am not a big pizza lover. I have pizza fewer than six times a year unless I’m in Chicago more often than that. I must include New York hand-tossed pizza, too.

A picnic meal need not be a complicated event. Offering cold food items makes the menu easier to control. There will be less equipment to bring and fewer cleanups afterwards.

Sandwiches are a preferred picnic item. In the past a sandwich consisted of two pieces of bread and lunch meat. Sandwiches have been given an overhaul in recent years.

To add variety to ordinary sandwiches, choose from a variety of breads. Sandwiches are being made from pitas, flatbreads, and tortilla wraps. Cut the bread the night before and store in an airtight container.
